Season Two Re-watch Questions
Aug. 23rd, 2013 08:50 pmI did one of these after we completed the season one re-watch and it was a lot of fun, so I thought I'd do another for season two. I removed a few questions and added several others. I tried to hit all the big moments, but am almost positive I probably left out something major.
Have fun!
I've made a text box so you can copy and paste it in the comments with your answers.

Date: 2013-08-24 03:52 am (UTC)Banner moments from season two:There were so many. but for me the two that stand out were the two father-son confrontations. Arthur and Uther nearly did me in with their heated war of words in 2X08, then I was completely turned into a huge puddle of tears when Merlin and Balinor met in 2X13.
Thoughts on Gwen:I adore her; she and Merlin hit it off really well in series one. I was so wanting them to get together, even though I knew that wouldn't happen.
Lancelot or Arthur for Gwen: Lancelot. Her heart was always his and his hers. She loved Arthur but not in the same way.
Most hilarious moment of season two … perhaps the entire series: Uther marrying a troll. Oh my! I can imagine that they had fun whilst doing that episode.
Thoughts about Merlin telling Arthur Morgause had lied to him about his mother: Merlin really didn't have a choice if he wanted Arthur to remain whole. It was one of those moments I felt so badly for him, but, at the same time, I felt immense pride because he was putting Arthur's needs before his own.
Freya: LOVE! I am so glad Merlin had the time with her; he deserved some love :-)
Good Uther or bad Uther:He was a good person with a truly loving heart who allowed the loss of his wife to dictate how he ruled.
Thoughts on Merlin poisoning Morgana: He hadn't a choice if he wanted to save everyone else.
Should Merlin have let Kilgharrah go free: For the shows sake, yes, but if there were really a dragon and you thought it might attack, you sure as hell better not set it free, no matter what you promised!
The Last Dragonlord … anything you want to say: Colin can cry like no other. I could write a book on this episode. It will probably always be my favorite.
Favorite visiting noble: Lady Catrina, even if she was not really a noble.
Most gorgeous knight: Lancelot
A scene you wish they would have included that they didn't: Lancelot talking to Gwen as she slept, telling her why he was leaving. I didn't like how he left; the writers needed to give us more!
Best Kilgharrah wisdom moment:It is too late for me to figure which one.
Best Idiot Merlin moment: Probably when he fought Cedric in Arthur's room, but oh my it was entertaining!
BAMF Arthur moment: When he stopped Fraya's captor from harming Merlin
BAMF Merlin moment: When he stopped Kilgharrah with his sexy dragon-speak
Saddest season two moment: It's a tie between Arthur and his mother meeting and Merlin's father dying.
Happiest season two moment:When Merlin told his father who he was
Favorite spell Merlin used: Sexy dragon-speak to stop Kilgharrah from his destruction of Camelot.
When season two ended, were you happy with the series: Yes. I did mourn the loss of sweet Morgana, but we always knew that was going to happen, so ...
Who did you crush on: Merlin/Colin. Always.
Who did you really not like that much: Aridean
Favorite Gaius and Merlin moment: When Gaius hugs Merlin after Freya has died--it's probably my favorite Gaius and Merlin moment ever.
Anything else about season two that you want to add: Not this late at night
And, because I am doing this quiz, we have to send all our prayers/good vibes/ mojo/hugs to Colin to get well soon and to take better care of himself. Of course, I will volunteer my services to do this; it will not be a hardship, I assure you. Colin is in my prayers and I am sending virtual hugs. Have sent so many of those that he is bound to have felt them. *NODS LIKE I MEAN IT!*

Date: 2013-08-24 04:57 am (UTC)Banner moments from season two:Merlin lying to Arthur about his mother to save Uther. Merlin meeting his father. Merlin becoming the dragonlord. Merlin poisoning Morgana.
Thoughts on Gwen: Still liked her for the most part, but throughout the season she really starts to fade into the background and turn into just the love interest.
Lancelot or Arthur for Gwen:Lancelot, without a doubt.
Most hilarious moment of season two … perhaps the entire series:Merlin's fight with Cedric and the use of the word "clotpole" for the first time. :)
Thoughts about Merlin telling Arthur Morgause had lied to him about his motherI understand why he did it, but I thought there was a way to go about it without completely throwing magic under the bus.
Freya:Freya herself was fine, but didn't care for the romance with Merlin
Good Uther or bad Uther:Mostly bad Uther. I think the show was really good with giving him layers. But Uther did so many horrendous things, that it's hard to not see him as a villain.
Thoughts on Merlin poisoning Morgana:I don't think he had any other choice with the information he had.
Should Merlin have let Kilgharrah go free:No. Especially without getting any kind of assurance about what he was going to do.
The Last Dragonlord … anything you want to say: A really fantastic episode. Colin is fantastic in it. So, so, so many beautiful Merlin/Arthur moments. A great blend of humor, tragedy, action, and triumph.
Favorite visiting noble:Vivian. A witch, but very fun.
Most gorgeous knight:Lancelot.
A scene you wish they would have included that they didn't:An actual hug with Merlin/Arthur. More Merlin/Gwen moments.
Best Kilgharrah wisdom moment:I never felt Kilgarrah had much wisdom. Though I did love his laughing at Uther's predicament with Katrina.
Best Idiot Merlin moment:Using his magic at the beginning of The Witchfinder. Understood his impulse and felt so bad for him and was glad he got a moment to use his magic in peace, but it was dumb to do that out in the open.
BAMF Arthur moment:His speech to his knights after deciding to face Kilgarrah.
BAMF Merlin moment:Embracing his inner dragonlord and showing Kilgarrah who's boss.
Saddest season two moment:Balinor dying.
Happiest season two moment:Arthur cheering Merlin up at the end of The Lady in the Lake
Favorite spell Merlin used:Can't think of one.
When season two ended, were you happy with the series: Mostly. There were elements I didn't like, but overall it was satisfying.
Who did you crush on: Arthur and Merlin.
Who did you really not like that much: Aredian
Favorite Gaius and Merlin moment: Gaius making Merlin try the potion they were going to use to trick Katrina.
Anything else about season two that you want to add:Needed more Merlin/Arthur.
And, because I am doing this quiz, we have to send all our prayers/good vibes/ mojo/hugs to Colin to get well soon and to take better care of himself. Of course, I will volunteer my services to do this; it will not be a hardship, I assure you.
Definitely wishing Colin a speedy recovery and will bump anyone in line to play nursemaid. ;)

Date: 2013-08-24 11:59 am (UTC)Banner moments from season two: there was a lot, but definitely Merlin becoming a dragonlord and the almost hug scene from 2x06 :D
Thoughts on Gwen: nah, don't like the way they handled her story. Mainly because I don't like Arthur/Gwen
Lancelot or Arthur for Gwen: Lancelot. They're meant to be together, just like Merlin is meant to be with Arthur.
Most hilarious moment of season two … perhaps the entire series: again, there were so many. Uther and the troll, the almost hug, Merlin's fight with Cedric, dragging sleeping Uther through the castle in 2x12,...
Thoughts about Merlin telling Arthur Morgause had lied to him about his mother: I understand why he did it. It was the quickest solution. But I'd like it more if he told him the truth later on...
Freya: I wanted her to be free and live her life in peace. The romance aspect of it... well, Merlin was heartbroken after all the Arthur/Gwen action... but it wouldn't last.
Good Uther or bad Uther: shades of grey... he's doing what he thinks is right, but the death of his wife made him see the world in a very wrong way.
Thoughts on Merlin poisoning Morgana: Once again, I understand why he did it and I hate that it had to get that far.
Should Merlin have let Kilgharrah go free: no, not in the state of mind the dragon was in.
The Last Dragonlord … anything you want to say: Colin is one of the most brilliant actors I know and this episode gave him the space to let it shine in full brightness.
Favorite visiting noble: Lady Catrina. She wasn't a noble, but all the fun she brought with her! :D
Most gorgeous knight: we don't count Arthur, right? Then Lancelot.
A scene you wish they would have included that they didn't: I don't really know... Probably some more Merthur scenes :D
Best Kilgharrah wisdom moment: to be honest, I'm not sure there was that much wisdom in his words. The wisest thing he ever said was the two sides of the same coin speech.
Best Idiot Merlin moment: the fight with Cedric!!! :D
BAMF Arthur moment: after the fight with Olaf in 2x10 Sweet Dreams
BAMF Merlin moment: claiming his dragonlord status. So hot!
Saddest season two moment: Merlin's father dying and Arthur seeing his mother.
Happiest season two moment: Merlin meeting his father.
Favorite spell Merlin used: Dragon speak. I love the dragon speak!
When season two ended, were you happy with the series: yes, it has it's flaws, but I still like it.
Who did you crush on: Arthur all the way
Who did you really not like that much: Aredian is probably one of the most bleh characters of the whole show.
Favorite Gaius and Merlin moment: I like their sort of father/son scenes.
Anything else about season two that you want to add: too much Gwen/Arthur, not enough Merlin/Arthur :D
And, because I am doing this quiz, we have to send all our prayers/good vibes/ mojo/hugs to Colin to get well soon and to take better care of himself. Of course, I will volunteer my services to do this; it will not be a hardship, I assure you. Oh yesh, all the love I've been sending his way. He must be swamped in all the sweet fluffy feels the fangirls and fanboys are throwing at him. :D

Date: 2013-08-26 01:47 am (UTC)Banner moments from season two: Arthur helps Merlin escape during Beauty and the Beast, Arthur hears the truth about his birth from his mom, Arthur tries to kill Uther, Merlin lies to Arthur about magic to save his friend's soul, Merlin meets his father, loses his father, and then comes into his dragonlord powers.
Thoughts on Gwen: I still liked her, but I did think that some of her conversations with Arthur where she was meant to be showing how ~queenly she could be felt like blatant rip-offs of previous Merlin/Arthur conversations.
Lancelot or Arthur for Gwen: Lancelot, although I don't think Gwen/Lancelot ever got the proper storyline they deserved on this show.
Most hilarious moment of season two … perhaps the entire series: I liked Merlin stealing Arthur's food and teasing him about his weight in The Lady of the Lake.
Thoughts about Merlin telling Arthur Morgause had lied to him about his mother It was certainly angsty, but it was the good kind of angst that felt earned. This was one of the few moments in the show where Merlin had to make a show of turning his back on magic and it actually was understandable and made sense. In later seasons when they'd repeat this scenario, I'd feel very manipulated and cheated.
Freya: I really liked her! I'm not much for instalove, but I did think she and Merlin were adorable together. And while I can believe that Merlin instantly wanted to protect the poor pretty girl in chains and that Freya liked and was grateful to the boy who wanted to be her savior, I don't think if she had lived and they'd run away together that it would have lasted.
Good Uther or bad Uther: I think I consider Uther in a more negative light than 90% of fandom, but I do believe that for all his faults that he loved Arthur (and Morgana, to a lesser degree). This is why I never believed poltergeist!Uther in S5 was the real deal...No Uther of any incarnation would ever kill his son imo.
Thoughts on Merlin poisoning Morgana: I think the only alternative was confronting Morgana about what Morgause had done, but even if Morgana had been receptive and tried to stop her sister at that point, I don't think Morgause would've undone her spell. If Merlin hadn't acted, I think Arthur and Merlin and all the rest would've died. And Morgana would've felt badly about it, but it would've been too late. In later seasons whenever this was brought up, I wish Merlin had tried to explain his reasoning for poisoning Morgana because it felt like Morgana never understood why he'd turned on her.
Should Merlin have let Kilgharrah go free: I don't think he had much choice. But even so, I think anyone who's been enslaved for decades for simply being who they are should always be freed. To be quite frank, I had more sympathy for Kilgharrah even when he was on his vengeance-fueled tear than Uther.
The Last Dragonlord … anything you want to say: It was a strong season finale...I think of all the season cappers, I'd consider it the best written of the lot.
Favorite visiting noble: Hm, Vivian, I guess? It really bothered me that she hadn't been cured at the end of Sweet Dreams.
Most gorgeous knight: The answer will be Lancelot once he actually becomes a knight in S3 and S4.
A scene you wish they would have included that they didn't: Don't remember the deleted scenes for that season.
Best Kilgharrah wisdom moment: I guess anything to do with keeping an eye on Morgana or Morded, huh?
Best Idiot Merlin moment: When he lost his grip on the rope and Arthur fell into the dirt face-first! Or maybe when he popped out from under Arthur's bed with that goofy grin on his face.
BAMF Arthur moment: Facing Uther in Sins of the Father.
BAMF Merlin moment: Breaking out of his cell in 201, being infused with magical knowledge by Kilgharrah, and then protecting Arthur from Sigan. Or maybe him coming into his dragonlord powers in the finale.

Date: 2013-08-26 01:48 am (UTC)Happiest season two moment: Either the end of The Last Dragonlord or the end of The Lady of the Lake (which shouldn't have been happy because Freya was dead and Merlin was in mourning...but Arthur noticing Merlin's upset and trying to boost his spirits and then smiling at him in that unbearably sweet heart-eyes way gave me the warm fuzzies).
Favorite spell Merlin used: When he conjured the horse out of smoke in The Witchfinder.
When season two ended, were you happy with the series: Yes. I really loved the last two episodes of the season and was very hopeful for S3 at the time.
Who did you crush on: Arthur.
Who did you really not like that much: Morgause...I never really got her appeal.
Favorite Gaius and Merlin moment: I'm blanking on it at the moment.
Anything else about season two that you want to add: There was so much hope and lightness in the first two seasons that was lost as soon as S3 got underway and Morgana's evil switch had been flipped. In a lot of ways series 1 and 2 felt like a completely different show than series 3, 4, and 5.
And, because I am doing this quiz, we have to send all our prayers/good vibes/ mojo/hugs to Colin to get well soon and to take better care of himself. Of course, I will volunteer my services to do this; it will not be a hardship, I assure you. Sending good vibes Colin's way!

Date: 2013-08-28 01:00 am (UTC)and the use of the word "clotpole" for the first time. :)
Ah yes, I love Merlin's endearments for Arthur!
I never felt Kilgarrah had much wisdom.
It seems quite a few people feel this way about the dragon. I am the complete opposite--I thought he had really great things to say--and most of what he said came to pass. He gave Merlin the information he needed, but Merlin didn't heed most of it, just as most of us wouldn't. Fate is fate, no matter how we get there. I would be interested in reading more thoughts on why people don't like what Kilgharrah had to say. This interests me almost more than anything else having to do with Merlin.
His speech to his knights after deciding to face Kilgarrah.
Oh, this was a great moment!
Arthur cheering Merlin up at the end of The Lady in the Lake
This was truly one of the best Arthur/Merlin moments. Arthur had already showed how much he was changing, but this scene, for me, was just incredibly stunning as far as Arthur's maturity. I was all filled with warm fuzzies after that exchange!

Date: 2013-08-28 01:41 am (UTC)This is one of those episodes I didn't much like when I first saw it, but now I absolutely adore it; so many hilarious bits in it and then there's the moment when Uther has to cry over Arthur. Gah, that gets me every time. Merlin squeezing the kerchief ... oh okay, I better stop - lol!
the almost hug scene from 2x06
Oh, gah, I love this so much! Merlin is so adorable with his assuming and then Arthur is like .... er what? NO! One of those greatest non-hugs ever!
Merlin's fight with Cedric
Never let it be said that Merlin was passive-aggressive!
dragging sleeping Uther through the castle in 2x12,...
Listening to the commentary during this episode was very interesting. They used a skate board to make it easier to haul ASH through the hallway. Colin was injured during this particular scene, though, so that is not so good.
I agree with your assessment of Aredian. I just really didn't like him. I did enjoy listening to them talk about the actor who played him, however. It must have been so much fun for anyone who guest starred on Merlin. Who wouldn't want to dress up and play a villain on that show? Hehe

Date: 2013-08-28 02:10 am (UTC)So much love for this episode, even though it took a piece of my heart when I watched it for the first time. We get to see Colin emote quite a bit throughout the five series, but it was a rare treat to see Bradley get to shine in such a way.
I don't think Gwen/Lancelot ever got the proper storyline they deserved on this show.
This was one of the disappointments of the show for me--it seemed as if they teased us then pulled the rug out and said haha not so fast.
This was one of the few moments in the show where Merlin had to make a show of turning his back on magic and it actually was understandable and made sense. In later seasons when they'd repeat this scenario, I'd feel very manipulated and cheated.
I kind of feel like in The Sins of the Father, Merlin wasn't really turning his back on magic as much as he was just trying to save his best friend from never being able to forgive himself. To me, what broke me as far as Merlin renouncing magic was in series five in the Disir. I have not yet seen that scene where I haven't completely lost it.
This is why I never believed poltergeist! Uther in S5 was the real deal...No Uther of any incarnation would ever kill his son imo.
I could see Uther possibly being like this after death, but it really upset me because when it came down to it, Uther really did love his children and I had hoped that that would be something the audience could take away from the show.
It really bothered me that Vivian hadn't been cured at the end of Sweet Dreams.
Me too! That was so wrong of them to leave her, but, then again, I guess she had no true love to kiss her and rid her of the curse.
Merlin poisoning Morgana.
Another of those great Colin scenes.
There was so much hope and lightness in the first two seasons that was lost as soon as S3 got underway and Morgana's evil switch had been flipped. In a lot of ways series 1 and 2 felt like a completely different show than series 3, 4, and 5.
I agree completely. I love the first two series to bits and can watch them over and over. The final three series are much harder to watch; they are just so depressing! But I do have to admit loving series five--just so many incredible performances and moments that I have watched all of those episodes quite a few times ... with tears, of course.

Date: 2013-08-28 10:02 pm (UTC)Me either. It was a really powerful scene...Colin blew me away with his acting in it.
But I do have to admit loving series five--just so many incredible performances and moments that I have watched all of those episodes quite a few times ... with tears, of course.
I've probably watched 501 - 503 plus the two part finale 100x since they aired. The finale continues to rank as my favorite episode ever, if only because of all the amazing M/A scenes.

Date: 2013-08-29 06:54 pm (UTC)And while what Uther did to him and his race was horrible, I could never forgive Kilgarrah after "The last Dragonlord." He killed countless of innocent people. I understand that Merlin's first instinct is to be merciful, but I kind of hated that Kilgarrah survived after TLD.
